The Austin College women’s varsity water polo team finished its abbreviated season with a strong third place finish at the Division III National Championships as simulated by The FOSH on Friday. The ‘Roos topped Grove City for the second time in three contests with Lexi Wong tallying seven goals in a convincing 18-8 victory.
The ‘Roos finished the season with four straight (actual) wins after nine straight losses, most against top-flight competition. Including the simulated post-season matches the team ends the Covid-19-shortened term with a 6-10 record.
The FOSH is an “all-digital alternative to pencil-and-paper scoring,” which utilizes statistical modeling to produce in-season team rankings and simulated outcomes of future matches. The organization launched the virtual 2020 NCAA Championships, including the DIII tournament, “to raise money for The American Red Cross and The Greater Boston Food Bank” via a GoFundMe Charity campaign.
